5 Minute Vocal Warm Up for Beginner Singers

One of the first things you need to know when you’re starting out learning to sing, is how to do an effective warm up.

Not only will a good warm up protect your voice from potential injury but it helps you SOUND BETTER! Yep, its one of the easiest and most effective things you can do to start sounding better straight away.

So how do you get started? In today’s video I’ll explain what to concentrate on when you warm up then I’ll take you through three exercises that focus on different areas of your voice to give you a well rounded warm up.

Enjoy!

How to do a vocal warm up in 5 minutes

If you’ve only got five minutes to warm up before you need to sing, then you want to make all five of those minutes count! Here are a few tips that will help you to warm up your voice faster.

1. Do Mouth Moving Exericses

Get into the habit of moving your mouth more when you sing. People tend to mumble a lot which can muffle your lyrics. Practicing moving and opening your mouth during a warm up is a great way to get used to singing with better articulation. Here’s another tutorial I created that will help you work on articulation.

2. Activate Your Diaphram

Your instrument operates on AIR and your diaphragm is the ‘breathing muscle’, so use your warm up to activate it and start taking in deeper breaths. Grab these four free vocal warm ups and I’ll show you how.

3. Use gentle humming

Humming is a sneaky way to warm up quickly (and quietly if you need to). You’re vocalising without putting pressure on your throat muscles because we hum a lot softer than we do when we open our mouths to sing. Humming let’s you feel where your sound is vibrating and you can do some great smoothing exercises like elevator slides or hums followed by vowel sounds.

4. Start Slowly, Don’t Push Yourself

Warm ups take different lengths of time, depending on how much you have been singing and how ‘vocally fit’ you are. To avoid injury, start slow and don’t go for volume during your warm up. Just enjoy it! Its a great way to relax and get your mind and body ready to sing.
